Balayage vs Highlights in Durrës: How to Choose

Balayage and highlights both lighten hair, but regrowth decides the best choice. Compare maintenance, finish and salon timing in Durrës.

Balayage and highlights compared at Blooming Aesthetic Durrës

A client comes in with a photo saved from Instagram and says she wants highlights. Nine times out of ten, the photo is balayage. They are not the same technique, they do not grow out the same way, and choosing the wrong one is the reason people end up back in the chair sooner than they planned.

Here is the difference in plain terms, and how to work out which suits your hair, your budget and how often you can realistically come back.

What highlights are

Highlights are sections of hair lifted from the root down, usually wrapped in foil so the lightener stays put and works with heat. Because the colourist starts at the scalp, the lightening is even from root to tip.

That is the strength and the weakness at once. Root-to-tip lift gives you brightness all over and real contrast around the face, which is why highlights read as bolder and more polished. But it also means that as soon as your hair grows, there is a visible line where the natural colour starts.

  • Lifted from the root, wrapped in foil.
  • Bright, uniform, high contrast.
  • Needs a root touch-up every 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Best on hair that is already fairly light, or when you want a big change.

What balayage is

Balayage is painted freehand onto the surface of the hair. The colourist sweeps lightener down the strand, starting soft somewhere below the root and building density toward the ends. Nothing is wrapped — the product is open to the air, which lifts more gently.

The result is a gradient. Your roots stay close to your natural depth, the mid-lengths transition, and the ends are lightest. It imitates the way hair naturally lightens in the sun, which in Durrës is a look most women already have by August anyway.

Damage: honestly compared

Both use lightener, so both involve some processing. But balayage is gentler in practice for two reasons: the product usually sits at a lower volume because it is not sealed in foil, and the roots — the newest, healthiest hair — are largely left alone.

Highlights process closer to the scalp and repeatedly overlap the same hair every time you touch up the roots. Over years, that overlap is what leads to breakage at the mid-lengths. It is manageable with good aftercare, but it is real.

Which suits dark Albanian hair

Most of our clients start from a natural level 3 or 4 — dark brown, warm underneath. That warmth matters. When you lift dark hair, it passes through red and orange before it reaches gold, and getting past that stage safely takes time and often more than one session.

On dark hair, balayage tends to be the easier win. Caramel and honey tones sit naturally against a dark root and look intentional. Very light ash highlights on level 3 hair are achievable, but be prepared for a longer appointment, a toner, and a maintenance routine you have to actually follow.

The question we ask before we mix anything is not what colour you want. It is how often you can come back. That single answer decides the technique.

Time and cost

Highlights on a full head run around two to three hours. Balayage is similar, sometimes longer, because painting freehand cannot be rushed and dark hair often needs a second pass plus a toner.

Per appointment the prices are comparable. Over a year, balayage costs less, simply because you need fewer appointments. If you are budgeting, count the year, not the visit.

Choose highlights if

  • You want a noticeable, bright change.
  • You are happy to come back every 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Your hair is already light or previously lightened.
  • You want even brightness rather than a gradient.

Choose balayage if

  • You want low maintenance above everything else.
  • You like your natural root and want to keep it.
  • You want a sun-kissed, lived-in result.
  • Your hair is dark and you want to lighten gradually and safely.

Keeping it after you leave

Lightened hair in a coastal city takes a beating. Salt water, chlorine and strong sun all pull at tone, and the first thing to go is the ash — brassiness sets in within weeks if nothing protects it.

  • Rinse with fresh water immediately after swimming.
  • Use a purple shampoo once a week, not more.
  • Wear a hat between eleven and four in summer.
  • Book a toner refresh halfway between colour appointments.

Come in for a consultation before you book the colour itself. We will look at your natural level, check the condition of the ends, and tell you honestly what is achievable in one session and what needs two.
