Clients book a gel manicure, sit down, and then describe what they actually want: nails that do not bend, that hold a shape, that survive a month of typing and washing dishes. That is not a gel manicure. That is builder gel, and the two get confused constantly because the word 'gel' sits in both names.
The distinction is simple once you see it. A gel manicure is colour. Builder gel is structure. Most disappointment with gel nails comes from booking the first and expecting the second.
Gel manicure: colour that lasts
A gel manicure is a thin, flexible colour coat applied directly onto your prepared natural nail and cured under the lamp. Base, colour, top — three thin layers, each cured in under a minute.
It does not add thickness in any meaningful sense, and it does not add length. What it adds is a hard, glossy shell over the colour so it does not chip the way ordinary polish does on day two.

- Soaks off in acetone in 10 to 15 minutes.
Builder gel: structure that holds
Builder gel is a much thicker, denser gel — and, like everything we build, gel rather than acrylic. It is applied in a shaped bead and sculpted — with a raised apex around a third of the way up the nail — before it is cured. That apex is the whole point. It is a load-bearing arch, the same principle as a bridge.
Applied over your natural nail without adding length, this is called an overlay. Applied over a tip or a form to add length, it becomes an extension. Same product, different job.

- Stops the natural nail bending and splitting as it grows.
- Needs a refill every 2 to 3 weeks as your nail grows out.
- Can be shaped: square, almond, coffin, oval.
Which one do you actually need
Answer one question honestly: are you unhappy with the colour of your nails, or with the nails themselves?
If your natural nails are healthy, they reach the length you want, and they do not break — you want a gel manicure. Adding builder gel would be paying more for strength you do not need.
If your nails peel, bend, split at the sides, or break every time they get past the fingertip — a gel manicure will not fix any of that. Colour on a weak nail is still a weak nail. You want an overlay in builder gel.

The growing-out question
This is the most common reason clients come to us for an overlay. They want their natural nails long, but every time a nail gets past the fingertip it catches on something and tears — so they never get past a certain length.
A builder gel overlay solves this mechanically. The gel takes the impact instead of the nail. Underneath, the natural nail keeps growing undisturbed. After three or four months of overlays, most clients have the length they were never able to reach on their own.
Can you have both
Yes, and most of our clients do. Builder gel goes on first for structure, and gel colour goes on top. You get the strength and the finish. The appointment is longer and it costs more than colour alone, but it is a single visit.
Maintenance is where they differ most
A gel manicure gets removed and redone. There is nothing to maintain in between — after 3 to 4 weeks you come in, it soaks off, a fresh one goes on.
Builder gel gets refilled. Every 2 to 3 weeks the gap that has appeared at the cuticle is filled in and the apex is rebalanced, so the same structure keeps going for months. Skipping refills is what causes lifting, and lifting is what lets moisture underneath. Book the refill before you leave.
