Leg waxing before beach season in Durrës

Every June the same thing happens: someone books a leg wax for the day before they travel, arrives having shaved four days earlier, and there is not enough hair to grip. The appointment either gets postponed or produces a patchy result. Both are avoidable with two weeks of planning.

Here is what to know before your first appointment of the season.

Hair length is not negotiable

Wax needs something to hold onto. The working minimum is about five millimetres — roughly the length of a grain of rice, or two weeks of growth after shaving.

Shorter than that and the wax grips skin instead of hair, which hurts more and removes less. Much longer than a centimetre and the pull becomes unnecessarily painful because the wax has more leverage on each hair.

Timing around your trip

Book two to three days before you travel, not the day before. Freshly waxed skin is slightly red and the follicles stay open for about 24 hours, which is exactly when you do not want sun, salt water or a swimming pool.

Two or three days gives the skin time to settle completely, and you still get the full three to four weeks of smoothness while you are away.

The first time hurts most

There is no point pretending otherwise. The first wax on hair that has only ever been shaved is the most uncomfortable, because the hair is thick, the roots are strong and every follicle is at a different stage of growth.

It improves genuinely and noticeably. By the third or fourth appointment the hair comes back finer, sparser and easier to remove, and most clients describe it as mildly unpleasant rather than painful. That improvement only happens if you stop shaving between appointments — shaving resets the cycle.

How to make it easier

  • Avoid caffeine on the day — it makes skin more sensitive.
  • Do not book during the three days before your period, when pain sensitivity peaks.
  • Exfoliate gently 24 to 48 hours before, never on the day.
  • Arrive with clean, dry skin and no oil or lotion.
  • Take a paracetamol half an hour before if you are anxious about the first time.

The 24 hours after

Open follicles are vulnerable to bacteria and irritation. For one day, skip the things that introduce either.

  • No sea, pool or hot bath.
  • No direct sun and no sunbed.
  • No gym — sweat plus friction causes spots.
  • No perfumed lotion or self-tan.
  • Loose clothing rather than tight jeans or leggings.

Mild redness for a few hours is normal. Small red bumps that appear straight after and fade within a day are also normal. Anything still inflamed after 48 hours is worth telling us about.

Ingrown hairs: prevention, not treatment

This is what turns a good wax into a disappointing week. An ingrown hair happens when new growth cannot push through the surface and curls back under the skin, usually because dead skin has blocked the follicle.

The fix is exfoliation, and the timing matters. Start 48 hours after your appointment, then exfoliate two or three times a week with a scrub or an exfoliating glove. Moisturise daily. Skin that stays soft lets new hair through easily.

Nearly every ingrown hair we see could have been prevented with two minutes of exfoliating twice a week. It is the least glamorous advice we give and the most effective.

If you already have one, do not dig it out with tweezers. That scars. Exfoliate the area gently, keep it moisturised, and it will usually surface on its own within a few days.

How often to come back

Every three to four weeks through the summer, in step with your underarm and facial waxing. Hair grows in cycles and not every follicle is active at once, so the first few appointments will not clear everything permanently — but each one catches a different set of follicles, which is why results improve over a season.

If you can, book the whole summer in advance. June and July fill up quickly in Durrës, and the schedule only works if the appointments stay three to four weeks apart.

When not to wax

  • On sunburned or broken skin, or on feet with cracked heels.
  • Within a week of a chemical peel or strong exfoliating treatment.
  • If you use retinoids on the area — stop five days before.
  • Over moles, varicose veins or active skin infections.

Tell us about any medication or skin treatment when you book. It takes thirty seconds and occasionally changes what we recommend.
